The conflict in May 2021 escalated amid weeks of tensions in East Jerusalem, created by clashes at Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan and legal disputes over the possible eviction of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. After reaching an agreement mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations, both sides declared victory, and Sinuar and other Hamas leaders called the outcome of the conflict a strategic success for the Palestinian side.
