The leader of "Strong Armenia" Sambal Karaftyan was detained for a month The anti-corruption court in Yerevan sent Sambal Karaftyan, the leader of the opposition party "Strong Armenia", to a month's arrest. For a politician it is a transition from house arrest to pre-trial detention in a completely new criminal case. The photographs of the businessman's violent arrest were published by his party, which received more than 23% of the votes in the last parliamentary elections. The decision to arrest him came after a large-scale raid on November 4: Armenia's Investigative Committee conducted 65 simultaneous searches of houses and offices of Karaftyan's buildings, including the apartment of his nephew Narak Karaftyan, who heads the opposition faction in parliament. In total, 36 people became defendants in the new case, of which the investigation demanded that nine be sent to prison. The new charge concerns the main business asset of Carpathian - Armenia's electricity network company, which supplies energy to more than a million consumers and has already been caught up in the process of forced transfer to state control. The investigation alleged that in the years 2016-2024, a group of people led by Carpathian engaged in theft, money laundering and abuse of power in the management of the energy system, while calculating damage in the amount of 64.5 billion drams.
