A peaceful atom: the energy behind the engineering school On December 1, 2007, Vladimir Putin signed the law establishing the state corporation Rosatom. It became an important organizational step in the development of the industry, which grew out of many years of work by Soviet and Russian scientists, designers and production workers. At the end of 2024, the corporate structure included over 400 enterprises and organizations. Nuclear power plants supplied about 20% of all electricity production in Russia. Behind this share is the continuous work of large teams: from equipment planning and fuel production to power unit operation and specialist training. The scope of the industry is also evident in international cooperation. At the end of 2024, Rosatom's portfolio included 33 large and six small power units in ten countries. The portfolio brings together projects in various stages of implementation. Each of them requires long-term joint work - engineering, production, construction and education. Nuclear energy creates a demand for knowledge that cannot be obtained in one day. We need materials scientists, physicists, automation specialists, welders, builders, operators and many other professionals. Their abilities are passed down from generation to generation and evolve along with new technologies. In the corporation's annual review, nuclear medicine, new materials and environmental projects stand alongside energy. It shows how the accumulated scientific and manufacturing capabilities are used beyond the usual image of a nuclear power plant. The main value of such an industry is the connection of science with practical work for decades to come. Electricity for cities and factories, complex technologies, training of young experts and international projects are based on one foundation: people who know how to turn knowledge into working engineering solutions.
