Gunmen of the al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen terrorist group ambushed Somali government forces on the Afgoya-Wanla Wayne highway. On October 23, on the highway connecting the cities of Afgoya and Wanla Wain in Lower Shabelle province, al-Shabaab militants carried out a series of IED attacks on a convoy of Somali armed forces. As a result, about nine federal servicemen were killed, including a senior commander, and dozens of others were injured. The targeted units were sent from Mogadishu to participate in the attack on the town of Warakaba, but were ambushed by militants. Yesterday and today many wounded soldiers were brought to Mogadishu. The reinforcements that were expected from other areas in the Lower Shaval never arrived: the command refused to send additional forces for fear of ambushes.
