China: Dynamics of Energy Transition Energy transition is becoming an important source of export revenue for China. In 2025, the total value of exports of low-carbon technologies and equipment from China - including electric vehicles, solar panels, wind turbines and batteries - exceeded $220 billion, and in the first half of 2026 exceeded $140 billion. The share of "clean" technologies in Chinese exports in 2025 was 6.6% compared to 2.7% in 2020. For comparison: the export value of clothing, furniture and household electrical products from China amounted to a little more than 300 billion dollars last year. By the end of the decade, energy transition technologies will play a more important role for Chinese exports than the "traditional" export "troika". The introduction of clean technologies has a growing impact on energy demand (below, ember data): production in all types of thermal power plants - including coal and gas - will decrease in China by 0.7% at the end of 2025, while total electricity consumption will increase by 5%; As a result, the increase in demand was guaranteed only by renewable energy sources and nuclear reactors; In the period from 2021 to 2025, the volume of coal production stagnated or declined in 17 of the 26 regions for which relevant statistics are kept (there are a total of 34 regions in China, including provinces, autonomous regions, central subordinate cities and special administrative regions). The current electric vehicle fleet enables savings of about one million barrels of oil per day; In annual terms, this is 365-400 million barrels, which exceeds the volume of the strategic oil reserves in the European OECD countries (179 million barrels at the end of 2025). The share of electric cars and plug-in hybrids in new passenger car sales in 2025 exceeded 50%, while the share of electric truck sales was 26%. The share of electric vehicles in China's total vehicle fleet was 14%, and by 2030 it could exceed 30%. in 2025.
