The Trump administration has sued for stricter rules for refugees. Human rights groups filed a class-action lawsuit against the Trump administration, saying three changes in immigration policy allowed refugees to obtain green cards and accelerated the process of denying their legal status. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Massachusetts. It claims that the US Department of Homeland Security and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services are violating federal law. In November, the Trump administration ordered re-vetting of all refugees coming to the US under Biden. At the same time, processing of green card applications was stopped indefinitely. In addition, in October the authorities reduced the appeal period for a decision to terminate refugee status from 30 to 10 days. The plaintiffs believe that this is not enough to protect their rights. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of human rights organizations and four refugees from Afghanistan, Colombia, Ethiopia and Iraq. They are asking the court to temporarily block the new rules during the trial. The Trump administration has also previously proposed limiting refugee admissions next year to 17,500, saying the plan should focus first on white South Africans.
