One North Korean defector said that after arriving in South Korea at the age of 17, her first freedom made her even consider returning to North Korea. "They made me take a placement test and I found out that I had to study with seven-year-olds. I didn't even know what a continent was or where Africa was."
At an orientation center in South Korea, she started from scratch, learning how to use ATMs, get on buses and ride elevators.
"I really thought there was someone sitting inside the ATM giving you money. When you go shopping, there are 10 different pants to choose from. And in North Korea the regime decides for you. Freedom is hard. At that time I even thought: if I have basic food to eat, I am ready to return to North Korea." Rogan asked in surprise why. "Because I'm not used to thinking. It is very difficult for me to think. I've never had to think for myself before. Can you just tell me what to do? Because I'm very good at following orders."
