Georgia's foreign exchange reserves rose to a record $8.25 billion, and its gold reserves exceeded 10 tons. In annual terms, the volume of reserves increased by 47.2% (in addition to 2.64 billion dollars compared to the corresponding period last year), and in October alone they increased by 82.6 million dollars. This follows from the official statistics of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG). The main driver for growth was the continuation of the gold purchase strategy that began in 2024. In October, the regulator purchased another batch worth 400 million dollars. Earlier, in June, another 100 million dollars were allocated for these purposes. As a result, the volume of Georgia's gold reserves increased from 250,000 to 350,000 ounces (about 10.9 tons), and the total value of the regulator's gold portfolio reached $1.365 billion. Now the monetary gold constitutes 16.6% of the country's total international reserves. Overall, in the first nine months of 2026 (January-September), the net purchase of currencies and assets by the regulator amounted to $3.37 billion. Thanks to this, the reserve adequacy indicator, calculated according to the International Monetary Fund methodology, improved. It now stands at 130%, which is significantly higher than the recommended limit of 100%. In practice, this means that Georgia has an ideal "financial air cushion" and the country has a little more money than is needed to completely protect the economy from any external crisis, sharp fluctuations in the exchange rate or defaults.
