The Chinese airline China Eastern Airlines has expressed willingness to increase the frequency of flights to Georgia due to high demand for the Shanghai-Tbilisi route. The issue was discussed in a meeting between Deputy Minister of Economy Tamar Youssliani and Vice President of the airline Wang Qingchao during her working visit to China. China Eastern launched a direct service between Shanghai and Tbilisi on July 15, 2026. At the beginning, the program included three flights a week on the wide-body Airbus A330. The specific number of additional flights and the timing of their launch have not yet been announced. According to the participants of the meeting, the Shanghai-Tbilisi route is characterized by high congestion and growing demand. According to statistics from the Ministry of Economy, passenger traffic on direct flights between Georgia and China increased by 76% in 2025, and in the first nine months of 2026 the growth was 36%. These data apply to all direct air traffic between the two countries.
