The rules for paying for water and gas are changing in Georgia: those who consume more can pay a higher rate The Parliament of Georgia finally adopted amendments that allow setting different rates for water and natural gas per population depending on the volume of consumption. The law was approved on October 28 in the third reading: 75 deputies voted in favor, five against. What will change? Now the cost of a cubic meter of natural gas for domestic consumers is mainly determined by the service company and its area of operation. It doesn't depend on how much gas a particular family used. Now the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC, or the Sons) will be able to introduce tiered tariffs. Water: The cost may vary depending on the volume of consumption. The powers of the regulator are granted until January 1, 2036. Natural gas: A similar mechanism may be in effect until January 1, 2038. The idea is that when consumption is low the rate is lower and when consumption is high it is higher. Does this mean that the electricity bills have already gone up? not. Parliament changed the calculation rules, but specific rates, consumption thresholds and deadlines for their implementation have not yet been determined. Decisions will have to be made by the regulatory committee. The correction of gas and water rates is planned for the end of 2026.
