The Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency discovered a significant markup on certain medical services during a large-scale market study. According to the head of the department, Irakli Lakvinadze, experts examined the activities of about 170 inpatient medical institutions.

As part of the data analysis for 2022, the prices of approximately 13,000 medical services were examined. In some categories, a mark of 100% or more was identified. Now the agency is finding out what causes such a high cost of services and how economically justified it is. Lakvinadze emphasized that, in general, the Georgian medical services market remains competitive: concentration is low, and there is competition between clinics. However, in some segments problems were found that require further research. Does a high mark mean breaking the law? before. According to the head of the agency, final conclusions can only be drawn after analyzing the costs of the medical institutions.

The research is in its final stages. The results are scheduled to be published by the end of 2026.
