After the reconstruction, the traffic pattern on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi will change: there will be new turns, traffic lights, and a bicycle lane. Drivers will be able to turn into nearby streets without having to travel the entire avenue to make a U-turn. This was announced by the head of the Transport and Urban Development Agency of Tbilisi, Nino Begashvili. The main change is that intersections controlled by traffic lights will appear at the intersections of the boulevard with side streets. According to the mayor's office, this will reduce traffic flow in Rustaveli by about 30%. That's exactly how many cars, according to Begashvili, now drive down the boulevard to make a U-turn. What else will change: a dedicated bus lane will appear. A bicycle path will be installed. Additional pedestrian crossings will be organized. In the First Republic Square, it is planned to replace the paving stones with asphalt paving. The restoration of the boulevard began on July 23. The works are expected to be completed by the end of November 2026. The cost of the main contract is 20.49 million lari (about 7.9 million dollars). Separately, a provision is made for the purchase of sidewalk repair works in the amount of approximately 7.8 million lari (approximately $3 million).
