UN Security Council: The US and Russia vetoed each other's proposal regarding the Western Sahara, and in fact guaranteed that the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in the region would not be extended, a day before it expired. The force has been operating for decades in territory most of which is controlled by Morocco, but the Polisario Front, supported by Algeria, demands the establishment of an independent state there. In Morocco, they welcomed the result and demanded that the UN personnel leave the area.
