Spain's Minister of Transport, Oscar Fuente, said that today's accident was caused by an "inexplicable" instruction given by the national control center for rail traffic, after a malfunction in the safety system. According to him, the train drivers are not responsible for the accident. Fuente explained that at 08:30 in the morning the safety system stopped working on a 63-kilometer section of track, following a malfunction in the computer system. As a result, all trains traveling on that section were stopped. However, later on, the control center ordered the Ranfa train to resume its journey, without imposing any speed limit on it. At 08:53 the train collided with an Iryo company train, which was standing on the track.
