The residents of the province of Alberta, the richest oil province in Canada, voted against promoting the process of secession and creating independence. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation estimated that 76% voted against secession and against the proposal to hold an official referendum on whether to secede from Canada. 23% supported holding a referendum to separate from Canada.
