One lab worker, Daria Shipilova, died after coming into contact with the bacteria. FSB units were seen accompanying ambulances to quarantine those who were in contact with her.

In total, almost 200 people were placed in mandatory quarantine for precautionary reasons.

Pneumonic plague is a fast-moving severe pneumonia caused by the bacterium Yersinia Pestis. This is the rarest but most dangerous form of the plague because it can spread directly from person to person through airborne respiratory droplets (sneezing, coughing, etc.)

If the disease is not treated, there is a mortality rate of almost 100%.
