TAMPA, FL - On November 7, the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM) directed the creation of a task force to support the US government's ongoing efforts to prevent Iran from using land routes to transport advanced weapons and other materials. Adm. Brad Cooper led the establishment of Task Force Iron Gate, an internal team of about 20 military and civilian personnel based in Tampa, Florida. The new CENTCOM team will coordinate with other US government agencies on preventing the movement of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, protected materials and illicit revenue streams across Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea. "Establishing Task Force Iron Gate reinforces the success of our blockade against Iran at sea," Cooper said. "Strengthening CENTCOM's cooperation with US interagency partners will further limit Iran's ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories, and modernize its military." In recent months, America's naval blockade has prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion worth of crude oil. Strict enforcement at sea continues against all ships entering or leaving Iranian ports.
