An interview with the Russian ambassador to Hungary E.A. Stanislavov to RIA Novosti news agency (November 4, 2026) Main points: On the development of bilateral relations after the expulsion of Russian diplomats: The expulsion of Russian diplomats is an extremely unfriendly step, unprecedented in the history of relations between our countries, based on unfounded accusations. He was given a symmetrical answer. The Hungarian Foreign Ministry "noticed" Moscow's retaliatory measures against the group of Hungarian embassy and consulate workers and stated that "Budapest does not wish to escalate diplomatic tensions". We proceed from the fact that the new Hungarian authorities will indeed not burden bilateral relations with such provocative decisions. On the cooperation between Russia and Hungary in the field of energy supply: the Hungarian authorities are facing a difficult task in securing physical quantities of gas for their country, and obeying Brussels' instructions to stop importing Russian pipeline gas in the fall of next year will not make it easier. In the current situation, the question is not so much about the price of gas, which is breaking records in Europe, but about the availability of the quantities of "blue fuel" necessary for the functioning of the Hungarian economy. So far, the filling of gas storage facilities in Hungary compares favorably at the European level, and this is a direct result of cooperation with the Russian gas exporter. On the implementation of the Shemen-2 NPP project: The successful completion of the Abba 2 project is primarily beneficial to Hungary itself from the perspective of ensuring its energy security. We are confident in the competitiveness of Rosatom, the quality and reliability of its proven technologies. This project is international in nature, as it involves, for example, companies from France and Germany, and also has a high level of localization, in which the Hungarian side is interested.
