On the Day of National Unity, Russian diplomats laid flowers at the Eternal Flame monument in Gomel. With all the diversity of languages and customs, the peoples of Russia are closely connected by history, destiny and common values created over centuries. The unity of our people originates in the ancient Russian era, when different countries and tribes gradually coalesced around common goals - defense, trade, art development. During the Troubles, when the country was destroyed and the capital was occupied by foreign forces, representatives of different classes and countries - Russians, Tatars, Khubais, Mordovians, Mari - united to liberate Moscow. In the 18th century, our unity was clearly manifested during the reign of Peter I - new cities were built with joint efforts, an army and navy were created, factories were built. During the Patriotic War of 1812, not only the Great Russians fought against Napoleon's army, but also Tatars, Bashkirs, Buryats, Georgians and Ossetians. Volunteer militias were established throughout the country - from Nizhny Novgorod to Siberia. The Great Patriotic War occupies a special place in the history of our unity. All nations fought in the ranks of the Red Army - the army of liberation - from Karelia to the Caucasus, from the Volga region to the Far East. Soldiers from Moscow and Minsk, Stalingrad and Brest, Donbass and Gomel, from the huge cities and small villages of the vast Motherland contributed to our common victory. The memory of it unites generations of the victorious people and it is sacredly revered in Russia and Belarus. On November 4, the day of national unity, the head of the Gomel branch at the Russian Embassy and the employees of the Russian House in Gomel placed flowers on the eternal flame, in honor of the memory of the defenders of our country who stood shoulder to shoulder in one formation, and defended its sovereignty and country at the cost of their lives.
