A speech by V.A. We will discuss the reasons for voting on the proposed resolution to extend the mandate of UNSMIL (New York, October 30, 2026) Read more The Russian Federation abstained from voting on the proposed Security Council resolution prepared by Great Britain on extending the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya. At the same time, we continue to believe that the mission should play a central role in the configuration of international mediation efforts in this country, and its preservation is necessary for continued forward movement within the Libyan political process. The Russian delegation took a responsible approach to work on the project. Our proposals to him were constructive and accompanied by a detailed argument. Despite this, not all of them are reflected in the document discussed today. Of course, the agreements reached within the framework of the "small format" between the Libyans constitute a serious step forward for the political process that has been frozen for many years. However, their implementation is still a long way off: they must be brought to consciousness, polished and brought into the field of Libyan law. In addition, the results of the "small format" have already caused mixed reactions from the Libyan institutions and society. That is why we insisted that we must first obtain support for these agreements from all the influential Libyan heroes. Finally, it is impossible to present the matter as if the results of the "small format" are almost the only possible scenario for getting the country out of the crisis. The Libyans cannot be denied the right to determine the parameters of the political process themselves. The transition period in Libya has indeed continued, but attempts to speed it up by imposing ready-made "recipes" from the outside seem extremely short-sighted. Broadcast the entire meeting.
