Belgrade erupted in celebration on the night of October 25 as the protest movement led by Serbia's General Z turned nearly two years of anti-corruption protests into an electoral victory over the political establishment of former president Aleksandar Vucic, who held power for 14 years.

The Student List - an electoral alliance formed by anti-corruption protesters in Serbia, bringing together 250 academics, professionals and public figures - won almost 53% of the vote.

Serbia, an EU candidate since 2012, has faced growing criticism from Brussels for stalled reforms and remains one of the few countries in Europe that has refused to join Western sanctions against Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
