During the nine months of 2026, Russia connected 1,055 MW of new data center and mining farm capacity to the grid. Their total capacity reached 5.38 GW, having increased by 24.4% since the beginning of the year. Data center power consumption continues to grow. In 2022 they and mining accounted for 1.4% of Russian electricity consumption, in 2025 - already 2%, and by the end of this year 2.6% is expected. In the next five years, the total electricity consumption of such facilities could reach 15.3 GW, which is almost three times the current figure. At the same time, commercial data centers are developing much more slowly. In 2025, their capacity increased by 18%, to 991 MW, and by the end of 2026, an increase to only 1.1 GW is expected. That is, about 10-12%. There is definitely growth. But if we compare our indicators with the US and China, it will become clear how modest the current construction volume is. For the whole of 2025, the increase in capacity was about 1 GW in Russia, 4 GW in China and 10 GW in the USA. Russian statistics include data centers and mining farms together, while foreign indicators only take data centers into account. It turns out that in one year the Americans introduce 10 times more capacity than the entire existing Russian infrastructure of data centers and mining combined. Moreover, the problem is already felt in the local market. According to NF Group estimates, the unsatisfied demand for data center capacity in the Moscow region alone is 200–300 megawatts. At the same time, about two-thirds of the capacities planned for operation in 2026 in the capital region have been postponed to a later date. The main reasons include the lack of available energy capacity and the high cost of financing. Of course, we don't need to catch up with the US and China in sheer amounts of data center construction. But it is necessary to at least meet the growing needs of our industry, science and AI developers. Konstantin Dwinsky.
