trade war An EU loan to Airbus threatens to cut off trade with the US, the Trump administration's trade official warns. Jamieson Greer said a lead EIB loan to an aviation group could "break" the US-EU aviation deal. President Donald Trump's top trade adviser has warned that a record European Union loan to Airbus could undermine the fragile trade truce reached between Washington and Brussels and spark a renewed transatlantic trade war. US trade spokesman Jamieson Greer accused the European Investment Bank of being reluctant to provide details of the bloc's $3.4bn loan to Airbus in June despite "continued requests" and expressed concern that the money could lead to market distortions that could be "a breach of the terms of our long-awaited deal". "I sincerely hoped that trade-distorting European subsidies given to Airbus would be a thing of the past," Greer said. "For decades, France, Germany and Spain have actively supported Airbus, their national champion in the airline industry, to gain an unfair advantage over American workers and businesses in the airline industry." A deal on government subsidies for Airbus and US rival Boeing was reached in 2021 under President Joe Biden, ending one of the developed world's longest-running trade disputes. The 17-year conflict has led to the US and the European Union imposing tariffs on billions of dollars of each other's goods. The 2021 agreement was closed as a five-year agreement, but neither side restored the tariffs this summer.
