Canada supports the UAE's claim on the Iranian islands violates the principles of the UN Charter: FM spox Tehran, IRNA -. The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmail Bakai, condemns the support of the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Kernis, in the claim of the United Arab Emirates over three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf, calling it a blatant contradiction and a flagrant violation of the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. In a post on X early Saturday, Bakay rejected Canada's settlement with the Emirates' unfounded claim regarding the Iranian islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Little Tunb.

"The United Arab Emirates was established in 1971. However, despite the overwhelming historical record, geographical facts and documented evidence regarding Abu Musa and the Greater Teneb and the Lesser Teneb, it claims these Iranian islands whose history of being part of Iran goes back thousands of years before the establishment of the Federation itself," he wrote.

Bakay said Canada, more than most countries, needs to understand the importance of respecting territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

He pointed to Canada's historical experience, including the U.S. invasion during the War of 1812, the 1849 Montreal Manifesto of Annexation, and more recently, U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks about making Canada the "51st state" of the United States.

"Is territorial integrity and respect for historical and legal facts a fundamental principle for Canada, or does it only matter when Canada's own sovereignty is at stake? he asked.

The spokesman said it was contradictory for a country that has defended its territorial integrity for centuries to support a fabricated territorial claim, warning that such a position amounted to "sawing off the very branch it sits on".
