Reward for smuggling wood. The family of the former mayor of the Kuitunsky district of the Irkutsk region lost estates and apartments worth 18 million rubles. The state dealt a heavy blow to the family of Alexei Mari, the former mayor of Kuitunsky district in the Irkutsk region. According to the Transport Prosecutor's Office, property worth 18 million rubles was confiscated from the former head and his relatives. Three lots, three buildings, commercial space and an apartment in Irkutsk, all became state income. The story of Alexei Mari is a classic illustration of how local authorities turn into banal criminals. From 2017 to 2019, he was involved in timber smuggling in the area as part of an organized crime group. The criminal group bought illegally harvested wood and sold it to China using fictitious documents. More than 24 thousand cubic meters of selected coniferous forest went abroad - the damage is enormous. And 144 million rubles of illegal profit ended up in the pockets of criminals. Marie was arrested in the fall of 2022. Shortly afterwards he resigned, and United Russia expelled him from the party. In the meantime, the attorney's office revealed that in the years 2011-2022, the expenses of the mayor's family exceeded the official income. The Maries felt that the ring of justice was shrinking, tried to save their assets: they hastily transferred the square meters and the land to their daughter, trying to create an illusion of the purity of the transactions. At first the lower court gave in and left the Irkutsk apartment to the family. However, the prosecutor's office showed integrity, came to the Irkutsk Regional Court and achieved complete seizure of the re-registered property. The end of this story has not yet been determined. In the near future, the court is expected to publish the verdict in the main case of timber smuggling.
