Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for a global ceasefire in maritime transport on Thursday, November 7, declaring that attacks on civilian commercial ships are unacceptable and threaten international trade and security.

Mitsotakis said at the high-level meeting of the UN Security Council, which was held during Greece's presidency of this council, on developing technologies and maritime security, that commercial ships should be able to move freely and safely even during military conflicts.

"The targeting of civilian merchant ships is completely unacceptable," he said.

The Greek Prime Minister added that interference with freedom of navigation would increase shipping and insurance costs, create instability in global markets and ultimately impose higher costs on consumers.
