On Wednesday, November 6, at the Third Committee meeting of the UN General Assembly, the British representative announced that women and girls in Iran still face discrimination, arrest and prosecution for disobeying the mandatory hijab laws.
Calling Iran's crackdown on peaceful protests unjustified, he pointed to reports of the execution of at least 34 protesters on the 1404th day so far and demanded an immediate halt to the executions.
Britain's representative also condemned the torture and abuse of detainees and the widespread disconnection of the Internet by Islamic Republic authorities, saying: "Ethnic and religious minorities, including Baloch, Kurds, Baha'is and Christians, continue to face oppression."
Expressing his concern about threats to journalists, civil activists and human rights defenders, he emphasized that the threatening actions of the Islamic Republic are not limited to the borders of Iran. The British representative also expressed concern about the consequences of the ongoing war on civilians in Iran and the region and said that civilians must not be victims of armed conflicts.
