The Egyptian parliament has authorized the president of that country, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to take military action to defend the country against attacks by the Houthis supported by the Islamic Republic, if requested by Saudi Arabia. This license was approved in a closed meeting with the support of at least two thirds of the representatives. Taher al-Khouli, deputy chairman of the parliament's legislative committee, told Reuters that Egypt would send troops if requested by Saudi Arabia and in coordination with the two countries. The number of votes, the type of military support and the possible time of deployment of troops were not published. Sisi emphasized that Egypt's support will be limited only to the defense of the territory and borders of Saudi Arabia and will not include the attack on Yemen. Egyptian officials also described the possible mission as "purely defensive." This decision was made following the increase in Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia and the counterattacks of the Riyadh-led coalition. At the same time, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey agreed as part of the Mecca Mutual Defense Agreement on the rapid deployment of troops and equipment in Saudi Arabia. Egypt is not a member of this agreement.
