In the meeting of Queen Maxima with Osei Tutu II in Kumasi, several different traditions were combined in one frame; A European queen with a designed Batjaka dress, an Ashanti king with a royal coat and symbols and a large carpet with Persian motifs that covered the meeting space.
During her visit to Ghana, Maxima went to Menahia Palace to meet Otumpo Nana Osei Tutu II, the Asantehan or traditional king of the Ashantis. Ghana is a republic and Osei Tutu II is not the king of this country in the political sense, but the traditional chiefdom system and kingdoms still have an important place in the social and cultural structure of Ghana.
The Ashanti court is generally known for its traditional Kente cloth, abundant gold and ceremonial symbols.
Maxima, on the other hand, wore a long and colorful dress by the Italian brand Etro; A dress previously seen on his travels to Africa. The fabric pattern also recalls a long way between the textile traditions of Iran, India and then Europe; An oriental pattern that later became one of the well-known designs in European clothing called "Paisley".
