New Delhi, the capital of India, is facing increasing air pollution and growing environmental concerns. Pictures released by the city show the historic India Gate amid a thick layer of smog. At the same time, the surface of the Yamuna River is covered with layers of polluted white foam and the police are also enforcing new restrictions to prevent a number of polluting vehicles from entering the capital. According to air quality monitoring data, Delhi's overall pollution index reached around 370 on the morning of Thursday, November 5, crossing the 400 mark in several areas of the city, which is in the very unhealthy to dangerous category. In Jahangirpuri region, the pollution index reached 459 and Jharwad region of India also recorded a number of 399. The increase in pollution comes as India approaches winter, a period when air quality in Delhi and its regions usually drops sharply due to a decrease in wind speeds, atmospheric stability and the accumulation of pollutants.
