Three US officials told CNN that the US military carried out limited strikes on Kesham Island on Monday, designed to protect US forces and equipment in the area.
One of these sources said that the American attack was carried out in response to the firing of the Revolutionary Guards at an American plane. According to CNN, this operation does not appear to be the type of large-scale military operation that US officials are considering. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported on this operation, reported that other similar attacks had been secretly carried out in the past.
Another American official said: "It was a defensive measure against people from Iran targeting American assets with surface-to-air missiles."
CNN writes, but this new action, on the eve of Election Day, is a reminder that the situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran remains unresolved and the option of renewed military conflict is still on the table.
