West Azerbaijan Province: Lake Urmia's water volume increased 10.2 times last year Mahdi Rustminjad, Acting Civil Affairs Coordinator of West Azerbaijan Province, told IRNA that according to the statistics of November 8, 1405, the water volume of Lake Urmia reached two billion and 550 million cubic meters; compared to 250 million cubic meters in the same period last year. These data show a 10.2-fold increase in the volume of water and an increase of 920%. According to him, the extent of the water area of the lake increased from 460 to 1971 square kilometers and increased by 328%. The water level rose by 1 meter and 14 centimeters and reached 1270 meters and 59 centimeters. Also, Rostminjad announced the implementation of the "Roan Stream" campaign to dig and reopen rivers and channels leading to the lake, and stated that its purpose is to facilitate the entry of runoff water, especially during the rainy season. He considered the continuation of these actions and the participation of people, farmers and local institutions as necessary for the restoration of the lake. Lake Urmia, between the provinces of West and East Azerbaijan, has been facing severe water depletion and extensive retreat over the past few decades. An increase in the volume of water compared to a year of only little water does not mean a sustainable restoration; Its sustainability depends on the continuity of the water supply and the management of the withdrawal from the basin's resources.
