Based on blockchain data and an announcement by the Binance exchange, the exchange's transaction processing wallets were the target of a major cyber attack during which approximately $6.3 billion of digital currency was stolen. Binance said in a statement on its X social network that initial investigations pointed to a compromised laptop, but further investigation revealed new dimensions to the security flaw. According to blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs, hackers broke into Binance's transaction signing infrastructure and pulled off this massive theft in less than 20 minutes. Binance Co-CEO Richard Teng assured that the losses will be compensated using the users' safe assets fund and the company's resources. Some blockchain analytics firms saw this attack as similar to actions attributed to North Korean hackers; However, Binance has not yet confirmed the identity of the attackers. However, since half of the stolen assets were stablecoins, the issuers were able to freeze about half of the stolen assets (almost $3.1 billion) remotely.
