A surgeon in the state of Florida was able to remove the prostate of a 66-year-old man suffering from cancer about 56 kilometers away by controlling a remote robot. This surgery, which is the first completely remote surgery using a robot in the United States, was performed in the presence of another surgeon at the patient's side.
According to the New York Post, Dr. Vipal Patel, founder and medical director of the Global Robotics Institute at AdventHealth Medical Center, controlled the robot surgeon from an Orlando suburb while the patient was being operated on in Mineola. Patel described the achievement as a step towards a "new era of surgery" and said that the technology may in the future reduce geographic barriers to access to specialized treatments.
This analysis was done after 10 remote test analyzes between America and Angola. According to officials at Advent Health, the patient is doing well after the operation, but the success of this operation does not mean that it is safe for widespread use.
