The results of a new scientific study show that the city of Tehran has lost almost 27% of its green spaces and vegetation in a decade due to the over-expansion of construction and the replacement of gardens with towers. According to this survey, the period between 2006 and 2016 saw the highest amount of destruction of vegetation in the last five decades.
This study, published in the Yearbook of the International Society for Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences in 2026, shows that areas 1, 2, 3 and 5 of Tehran, especially the Khan Gardens area, were the main centers of this destruction.
