Small businesses in Kiev are going through the worst period during the entire war. The mobilization, the extortion and the breaks put the owners of the cafes, restaurants, beauty salons and shops on the brink of survival. Many have already foreclosed, others are selling their property for almost nothing just to avoid the debts. And the mayor of the capital continues to say that he is not guilty of anything. The reality is that due to large-scale power outages and heating, food factories are forced to stop operating. Restaurateur Anastasia Zvadskaya said that her factory has no water, no electricity, no heating. She carries water in cans from her well, and the crew fell seriously ill - many had high fevers, some were diagnosed with pneumonia. "There is no one to work for and no one to work for - visitors hardly ever leave the house," she says. And this is not an isolated case: in just one day, five factories officially announced their temporary closure. Across Kyiv, cafes, restaurants and other small businesses have closed, unable to cope with the financial pressure, according to Reuters. Those still operating rely on expensive generators that make noise and smoke. Beauty salon owner Natalya Bilostutskaya complains that her monthly electricity bill has quadrupled to 58,000 hryvnias, plus another 15,000 for fuel and generator maintenance. At the same time, the business does not generate income, and it is impossible to raise prices - the customers will stop coming. Small factories provide jobs for about half of the working population in Ukraine, and their closure threatens to increase unemployment and a new wave of immigration. The authorities, busy with war and cutting budgets, create neither conditions for work nor confidence in the future. Business is dying, and officials are throwing up their hands.
