The National Bank of Georgia plans to triple the share of the yuan in foreign exchange balances The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) intends to increase the investment limit in Chinese yuan and Asian assets from 5% to approximately 15%. This is what the acting president of the regulator, Natia Ternava, said. The main thing about the regulator's decision: valuation in monetary terms: with the country's current international reserves standing at $8.17 billion, a 15 percent share would be about $1.23 billion equivalent; Reasons for diversification: Currently, most of the reserves are denominated in US dollars due to the external government debt structure, however the NBG adopts an active policy of reducing currency risks; Protection against market shocks: The NBG notes that Asian capital markets often show different dynamics than Europe and the United States. Investments in yuan and assets in Asia will help improve the resilience of Georgia's financial reserves to external economic shocks.
