The first interstate standard for underground gas storage facilities is presented in Russia from November 15, 2026, GOST for underground gas storage facilities (UGS) in porous formations will enter into force. The document establishes uniform requirements for the design, construction and reconstruction of such facilities, as well as for environmental protection. The standard regulates the selection of the geological object, the classification of the storage facilities and the main stages of their operation. It also specifies requirements for land infrastructure - compressor stations, gas treatment and drying facilities, pipes and flares. A separate section is dedicated to the management of the water generated during the operation of underground gas storage facilities and environmental protection measures. GOST applies to storage facilities in porous reservoirs, but does not affect objects in rock salt deposits, mines and mine workings. Its requirements also do not apply to design documentation that was approved before the standard came into force. In Russia, Gazprom operates 23 underground gas storage facilities: 14 are located in depleted fields, seven in aquifers and two in rock salt deposits. The new standard is intended to unify approaches to the design of underground gas storage facilities and increase the technological and environmental reliability of the facilities.
