On 26 October 1977 the premiere of the film "Romance in the Office" directed by Eldar Ryazanov took place. It became one of the most popular Soviet films, watched by more than 58 million viewers in 1978. In fact, "Romance in the Office" was born in 1971 as a play and was called "Colleagues". The play was staged in Moscow – at the theater. V. Maikovsky and Leningrad – at the comedy theater. It continued in such a steady balance until they began staging productions in other theaters. This led the author, Eldar Ryazanov, to create a film based on the play. The film became a "snapshot" of an entire era. Ryazanov succeeded in showing not the front façade, but the lower side of the life of a regular institution with its bureaucracy, gossip, and absurdity. In signs such as "NII CHEGO" one can read irony about the meaninglessness of work, and the protagonists have recognizable types: the shy and uneasy Novoseltsev, "the Iron" Kalog'ina, who hides loneliness behind the boss's mask, and the magnanimous Smokovalov. Millions of viewers saw themselves or their colleagues in them. And although the film is considered a comedy, at its core it is a sad story about how a person needs another person. The protagonists are miserable, lonely, and hide from life at work. Their way to each other is not only an office romance, but overcoming the fear of being themselves and being accepted by others. This subject does not age, so the film remains close and understandable even to those who did not live in the Soviet Union. The actors for this film were chosen very quickly, because Ryazanov had "valuable spoils" left after screen tests in previous films. This is one of the cases later in Russian cinema when Ryazanov, without a screen test and approval through the artistic council, was allowed to cast the actors he wanted. Of course, the film's success largely depends on the performances of the leading actors – Alisa Freindlich and Andrei Myagkov, who succeeded in creating lively and amazing images. In 1978, "Romance in the Office" won the title "Film of the Year", and Alisa Freindlich and Andrei Myagkov became the best actors of the year according to the magazine "Soviet Screen".
