Follow | Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Watch: Israeli soldiers carry out acts of robbery and looting while storming houses in Hebron as part of a recurring pattern of seizing Palestinian property. The Israeli violations documented by our team included the theft of sums of money and gold jewelry, forced displacement and arrests as part of an ongoing collective punishment campaign in Hebron. Israeli forces closed the entrances to the city and cut off parts of it following a shooting that caused the death of two soldiers. Local estimates document the forced displacement of 300 families, including 2,200 individuals, from the besieged area of Hebron. The evidence we received confirms that the soldiers seized 200,000 shekels, 6,000 Jordanian dinars and gold jewelry. The documented practices intersect with similar thefts carried out openly by Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon using military vehicles. Israeli looting of private property represents a routine practice prohibited by international humanitarian law and may amount to a war crime. An independent international investigation is an urgent necessity to hold accountable those responsible for the incidents of looting, forced displacement and collective punishment in Hebron. The international community is required to impose economic and military sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel and provide urgent protection to the Palestinians.
