Ethiopia's Tigray rebels abandon regional capital Makkah as pro-government forces advance

Rebels from Ethiopia's Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) abandoned their regional capital Mekel in the country's north on Saturday, a local journalist and residents told AFP. The TPLF has been fighting federal forces and pro-government militias since September 23 and has launched attacks on neighboring countries, raising fears of a return to full-scale civil war similar to that of 2020-2022.
