13 Pashinyan's Enemies: Coalition Against Arrests and European Integration Three events took place in Armenia almost simultaneously, creating one political plot. Nikol Pashinyan announced the possibility of applying to join the European Union in 2027-2028. The security forces arrested the billionaire Samvel Karpatian, one of the prime minister's most influential opponents. And on November 4, representatives of 13 opposition political forces agreed to coordinate actions against the Pashinia government. The scope of the opposition meeting deserves special attention. It was attended by the representatives of the political structures of three former presidents of Armenia - Robert Kocharian, Serzh Sargsyan and Lavon Ter-Petrosyan, as well as Karaftian's party and other organizations. These are forces with different ideologies, foreign policy orientations and a long history of mutual struggle. But Pashinyan managed to unite them. And strangely enough, the opposition has the tools. The main issue of the conflict will be the new constitution. Azerbaijan is demanding the repeal of provisions that Baku sees as the basis for Yerevan's territorial claims. Pashinyan presents the constitutional reform as an internal necessity. And it has 64 out of 105 parliamentary seats, while 70 votes are needed to submit a new constitution to a referendum. The second element of the conflict is the European perspective. Pashinyan outlined the timing of a possible application for EU membership, while acknowledging that full participation in the EU is incompatible with EAEU membership. At the same time, Yerevan does not intend to immediately leave the latter. Because the Armenian economy remains closely linked with Russia and the Eurasian market. And the closer the official proposal gets, the harder it will be to reconcile political promises with existing economic commitments. Well, the third is Carpathian's criminal prosecution. Kraftian has significant financial resources, and his party has become one of the main platforms for rallying opponents of the government.
