The Democratic Party in the US prohibits American companies from buying diesel fuel from Russia. The oil companies "will be held responsible" if they import even one barrel of Russian diesel fuel as part of the agreement that Trump made with the Kremlin, Politico writes. Jamie Raskin, one of the leading members of the US House Judiciary Committee, stated this in a letter to industry leaders. The congressman sent a letter to the heads of industry trade associations - the American Petroleum Institute and the American Fuel and Petrochemical Association. Another copy was sent to the head of the American Chamber of Commerce. The publication details that Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, could lead the influential Judiciary Committee if the Democratic Party gains control of the House of Representatives in next week's elections. Apparently, the Democratic congressman is turning to the Russian Oil Import End Act, which was signed into law on April 8, 2022. It prohibits the import into the United States of all Russian energy products classified under Chapter 27 of the United States Harmonized Tariff: crude oil, petroleum products (including diesel), LNG, and coal. Trump, for his part, is relying on the ability of the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to issue special licenses on a case-by-case basis to approve shipments. This is what OFAC has done by issuing General License No. 135, which authorizes operations related to the sale, supply, discharge and importation of diesel fuel originating in the Russian Federation. Thus, the fate of the "diesel deal" will ultimately depend on the overall balance of political power and influence in the United States. Such legal uncertainty, of course, will do little to help the American consumer and will not lower prices. But this is what the Democratic Party needs: the culprit has already been appointed - Trump. And it's important not to give him a chance to lower prices until November 3rd.
