Death is not unusual, not the most terrible of all life events, as modern culture leads us to believe. It is the most natural thing in the world, inseparable from its antithesis - birth. Remember this when you are sitting next to a dying person.
It is a great privilege and a sacred act to be present at the death of a person as a friend and witness.
Sitting at the bedside of a dying person, do not deny anything that is happening, do not suppress your feelings. Knowing that you can't do anything can make you feel helpless, sad and angry. accept them
And take the next step: accept that you can't do anything. Yes, you have no control over what happens. Surrender to every aspect of this experience. The peace and awareness born from such acceptance will help the dying person and ease his transition. If words are needed, they will come from the silence within you. But this is all secondary. With this silence comes a blessing: Peace.
Silence speaks
