๐ฌ๐ง Russian fishing vessels suspected of spying on submarine cables near Britain.
๐ฅ The Telegraph has uncovered more than 500 episodes of Russian trawlers lingering over or along communication cable lines between Britain, Europe and the US.
๐ Journalists analyzed four and a half years of vessel tracking data from Global Fishing Watch. They detected 17 vessels moving at low speed for a long time near the mapped cables.
๐ According to the publication, NATO is monitoring these civilian vessels due to suspicions that they are being used to collect data on underwater infrastructure. Documented routes may indicate reconnaissance, but they do not in themselves prove preparation for sabotage.
๐ The Chairman of the Defense Committee of the House of Representatives, told LBC that Russian ships and submarines map critical infrastructure. He also drew attention to the lack of capabilities of the British Navy to defend it.
โน๏ธ Back in May, the British government announced plans to toughen the penalties for damaging submarine cables and introduce new requirements for their operators. At the same time, the government noted that the vast majority of the damage has unintentional causes, including fishing and dragging anchors.
