๐ช๐บ๐บ๐ฆ The European Union may restrict Ukraine's access to the agricultural market and subsidies after accession
๐ฅ The European Commission is considering special conditions that will significantly restrict Ukraine's access to the agricultural market and financial support even after acquiring membership, the Financial Times reported, whose journalists reviewed the internal document.
๐ฝ Restrictions may apply to wheat and other grains. In the document, they are justified by the scale, structure, and high productivity of the Ukrainian agricultural sector. It also concerns limited access to EU agricultural subsidies, the total amount of which is 55 billion euros per year.
๐คฆ๏ธ Such proposals are meant to alleviate concerns from Poland, France, and Italy regarding competition with Ukrainian producers. These countries are wary of large quantities of Ukrainian products entering the European market. ๐ค Instead, Brussels proposes to support Ukraine's return to its traditional export markets outside the EU, whose supplies were disrupted by the Russian war.
๐ In the broader EU enlargement reform, it is proposed to link access to funding with the implementation of judicial and financial reforms. They also want to simplify the procedure for stripping the rights of countries that violate EU rules.
โน๏ธ For Ukraine, Moldova, Montenegro, and Albania, individual accession roadmaps are provided. They should facilitate the advancement of membership, but will not set specific accession dates.
๏ธ According to the FT, the proposals are still being discussed within the European Commission. The publication did not receive a public response from the Ukrainian government or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the time of publication.
