Chara Sands - a desert in the middle of the taiga in northern Transbaikalia, not far from the BAM railway, between the taiga and the marshes lie Chara Sands - dunes at the foot of the snow-covered Kodara Mountains. They are often called the northernmost desert in the world, although geographically they are not a desert. The block measuring about 10 by 4 kilometers is part of the Kodar National Park. The sand fiber was formed tens of thousands of years ago, when glaciers blocked the Char Valley and there was a large lake here. After his disappearance, the wind turned the accumulated sand deposits into dunes reminiscent of the deserts of Central Asia. Furthermore, the sands are located in the permafrost zone. The climate here is sharply continental: in the summer the air can warm above +30 degrees Celsius, and in the winter the frost reaches 50 degrees Celsius, and the dunes are covered with snow.
