The Sakhalin Region will purchase three Mi-171 helicopters for communication with the Kuril Islands The government of the Sakhalin Region plans to purchase three Mi-171 helicopters, which will be used for regular transportation in the southern Kuril Islands. Three cars will be purchased by the end of this year. Unlike the Mi-8, they are capable of instrument flights, including poor visibility. Governor Valery Limerenko spoke of his intention to purchase planes during a meeting with the residents of Shikotan Island. One of the main topics for discussion was the transportation accessibility of the island. Limerenko also said that the helicopter service between Shikotan and Konashir, which was suspended in September due to the increase in fuel and spare parts prices, has already been restored. Currently the flights operate on Sundays. Flights between Sakhalin and Konashir are still available once a week. If necessary, the regional authorities are ready to add flights. However, there are currently no requests for additional flights on this line on the waiting list.
