Permafrost under surveillance New observation points for Campfire appeared in the autonomous okrugs of Yakutia, Chukotka and Yamalo-Nents. By the end of the year, the state monitoring system will begin collecting data from almost 100 points. This is an important step for areas where the state of the permafrost directly determines the stability of residential buildings, roads, pipelines and industrial facilities. The new points will make it possible to monitor soil temperature and the depth of their seasonal thaw in real time, instead of using rare expeditionary measurements. The uniqueness of the system is that the data will be received centrally - to one country's network. This will give scientists and planners not individual observations, but a similar picture for different regions of the Arctic and Eastern Siberia. Based on this data, it will be possible to more accurately assess the risks of deformation of buildings and infrastructures and make construction decisions taking into account the real condition of the land. For the residents of the cities and towns of the north, it is not an abstract science. Monitoring helps detect dangerous changes in time and prevent accidents. Almost 100 points by the end of the year are only the beginning of the formation of a full-fledged network, but it is already clear that permafrost monitoring is moving from the category of scientific research to a practical task at the state level.
