Houthis reportedly operate email confirmation system for ships crossing Red Sea Yemen The Houthis have set up an email-based confirmation system for ships seeking safe passage through the Red Sea, the Wall Street Journal reports. According to the report, captains submit their vessel details and state that the ship has no ties to the US, UK, Israel or Saudi Arabia. The Houthis usually respond within 24 hours, and issue a seven-day passage permit along with navigation instructions. The system operates through the Houthis' humanitarian operations coordination center, which oversees traffic through the Bab al-Mandab strait. In August it was reported that the service is voluntary and free of charge. It denied reports that it planned to charge ships for passage and warned companies not to pay those demanding commissions. The Houthis declared a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia on July 20, prohibiting all ships from loading or unloading cargo in Saudi ports.
